How To Keep Your Child's Teeth Healthy

If you are like most parents, you are probably concerned about your child's teeth. You want to make sure that your child's oral health is properly taken care of. Sometimes it is hard because children often eat sweets and drink sugary drinks.

However, while it can be expected that children will eat sweets there are some ways you can ensure that it does not in any way damage their teeth. Here's a look at some of the basic things you should be doing to protect your child's teeth.

Start Early

As soon as your child gets their first teeth, you should clean them with water or a clean cloth. There are also soft toothbrushes available that you can buy to help clean these first sets of teeth. Once your child is old enough, you should show them how to brush their teeth properly.

Make sure they understand that they must brush all their teeth, and always provide fluoride toothpaste for brushing their teeth. Ensure that your child spits out the toothpaste when they are finished. Motivate your child to brush their teeth by buying toothbrushes with cartoon characters or their favorite color.

Healthy Eating

One of the main reasons why children experience tooth decay is because they're not eating healthy foods. It is important that children eat food that has calcium because it's going to help strengthen their teeth. Encourage your child to drink milk, and eat cheese and yogurt. These food sources contain a lot of calcium.

Your kids can only eat what you have in your home at any given time. This means that you have to make a conscious decision as a parent to bring healthy snacks into your home.

This doesn't mean that your child cannot have sweets or sugar-based snacks. You just want to ensure they have healthy options available. Be sure to serve water in between meals too and limit their intake of sugary drinks.

Visit the Dentist

It's important to get your child to the dentist early. This will help prevent dental anxiety. Your child should visit as soon as they get their first teeth. Make sure that you select a dentist that understands how to work with children.

This will help to alleviate any dental anxiety your child may be feeling. You can ask your dentist about fluoride treatment and the use of a sealant to help prevent tooth decay in your child as well.
